The acting career of Rachael Leigh Cook began with with the leading role of The Girl in 26 Summer Street (1994), a black and white independent 17 minute short film in 16mm format produced and written by Peter Syvertsen and directed by Steve Erik Larson, based on the William Carlos Williams short story called "The Girl With the Pimply Face" (circa 1938). The story takes place in Paterson, New Jersey during the summer of 1938. This film first appeared at the 1997 Minneapolis-St. Paul International Film Festival at the Bell Auditorium on 19 April 1997. It also appeared as part of the 1997 Midwest Film and Video Showcase at the Walker Art Center on 16 May 1997, where it was the second of eleven features. Also, in May 1997, Northwest Airlines screened the film in the business and first-class sections of flights to Europe as part of their "Indies In the Air" program. This film has appeared on the Independent Film Channel. Peter Syvertsen and Steve Larson were been nominated for a D. L. Mabery Award for Outstanding Minnesota-made Independent Movie or Video for this film. This award is named in honor of the Minneapolis entertainment writer who died from complications of AIDS in 1994. Nominations were selected by the Minnesota Film Board and the Independent Feature Project/North. The award was given to the documentary film "Not a Nickel's Worth of Doubt". A free screening of the film occured 07 March 1998 at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. More showings will be announced as they come to my attention.

    She starred as Emma Baker in the CBS movie-of-the-week, Country Justice [aka Family Rescue] (1997), which starred George C. Scott, and also Ally Sheedy and Don Diamont. Rachael played a teenage rape victim who, along with her grandfather, fights for custody of her son from the man who raped her. It aired on 14 January 1997.

    She appeared in a television mini-series called True Women, based on the identically titled novel by Janice Woods Windle (this book has been chosen as one of six role-model books reccomended by the Library of Congress for youth groups and schools to use in 1997). This miniseries aired on CBS on 18 and 20 May 1997. Rachael appeared in the first hour of the first half of the program. It also starred Dana Delaney, Annabeth Gish, Powers Booth, Michael York, Tina Majorino, and Charles S. Dutton. Rachael plays the younger Georgia Lawshe, a young plantation belle who is one of two friends separated by the Civil War. The story takes place between 1835 and 1870. Rachael filmed her part of this project near Austin, Texas.

    She appeared in a film called The House of Yes, a Mark Waters adaptation of a darkly comic play by Wendy MacLeod about an unusual disfunctional family. Rachael plays the role of Young Jackie-O in this film, and appears at the very beginning and very end of the film. It also stars Parker Posey, Josh Hamilton, Tori Spelling, Freddie Prinze Jr., and Genevive Bujold. This independent film appeared at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival, where it was purchased by Miramax after heavy bidding for $2 Million! It was released in Los Angeles and New York on 10 October 1997, and in theatres nationwide 17 October 1997. This film is now available on video.

    Rachael appeared as the character Tracy Lane on the film-episode "Payback" in a Showtime cable television film series called The Defenders, based on the old television series that starred E.G. Marshall, who also stars in this feature. Also starring are Beau Bridges, John Laroquette, and Martha Plimpton. Rachael plays a victim of an assalt that took place six years earlier. Her character is quiet, withdrawn, occasionally suicidal, and is confined to a psychiatric ward. Rachael's part of the production filmed in May and June of 1997 in Toronto, Canada. This film aired Sunday 12 October 1997. 

     
    The Eighteenth Angel

    She appeared as the character Lucy in the movie The Eighteenth Angel, a supernatural thriller filmed in Rome, Italy. She plays a young woman who, along with her father, gets wrapped up with dark forces (yep, it is a horror flick...) while on vacation. Filming on this project began on 18 March 1996, has since finished, and is due out later this year. This film also stars Christopher McDonald, Maximilian Schell, Wendy Crewson, Stanley Tucci, and Darnell Autry. This film has appeared on STARZ and possibly other cable networks. Rumors also indicate that it has been released in theatres in Southeast Asia in January 1998. This movie is now on video.

    Rachael will appear as Abby in Strike (aka The Hairy Bird), an independent film about a private girl's school in 1963. It also stars Gaby Hoffmann, Kirsten Dunst, Heather Matarazzo, Lynn Regrave, Merritt Wever, Catarina Scorsone, Monica Keena, Matthew Lawrence, and Vincent Kartheiser. The film is directed and written by Sarah Kernochan. It was filmed from June through August 1997 in Toronto, Canada. Rachael plays a mischievous goody-two-shoes.

    Rachael appears in a small role in Living Out Loud (formerly The Kiss - working title), a film about a divorced woman from New York named Judith and an elevator operator who end up having an affair. The film features historical flashbacks when the Judith was a teenager, having an erotic encounter with a young man, and also a dancing scene with "herself." Rachael plays the younger version of this woman, with actress Holly Hunter playing the adult version. The film also stars Danny DeVito. The script was written by Richard LaGravenese, who also directs this film. Rachael's part in the production was filmed during June 1997 in Los Angeles. This film was released 06 November 1998. This is now out on video and DVD.

    Rachael stars in the Miramax film She's All That. The film also stars Freddie Prinze Jr. (who also was in The House of Yes with Rachael), Matthew Lillard, Jodi Lyn O'Keefe, Usher Raymond, Kimberly "Lil'Kim" Jones, Anna Paquin, and Paul Walker. Prinze plays a teen who bets a friend he can turn the highschool's geekiest female student (Rachael) into the next prom queen, only to fall in love with her. The film is directed by Rob Iscove. Script is by Lee Fleming. It began filming 05 August 1998. SAT openened in theaters 29 January 1999.

    Rachael will appear as the character Delores, a "biker chick", in the October Films feature The Naked Man. This film is a directed by J. Todd Anderson and also stars Arija Bareikis, Joe Grifasi, Michael Rapaport, and John Slattery. It is written by J. Todd Anderson and Ethan Coen. It is a dark comedy. It was filmed in the Twin Cities, Minnesota during September and early October 1997. Those of you with good eyes may spot the author of this page in the background of this film. Rachael finished principle filming 04 October 1997 (her 18th birthday!) The Minnesota Film Board held a screening of this film at the Riverside theater in Minneapolis on 08 February 1999.

    Rachael will appear in the role of Cassie in a lower-budget teen drama film called The Bumblebee Flies Anyway. The film also stars Elijah Wood and Janeane Garofalo. The story is based on the Robert Cormier novel about a young amnesiac, played by Wood, who awakes in a hospital for terminally ill patients and attempts to uncover his own past. Production began 02 February 1998 in New York City. It will be directed by Irish filmmaker Martin Duffy.

    Rachael plays the leading role of Vera Leigh Johnson (sic) in an independent film called The Hi-Line (possible working title). It is directed by Academy Award winner (for sound in Jurassic Park) Ron Judkins. Ryan Alosio co-stars. Other actors include Margot Kidder and Stuart Margolin. Filming began around 18 February 1998 in Montana. It appeared at the Sundance Film Festival on Saturday 23 January 1999. Likely mainstream release is sometime in 1999.
